On-page search engine optimization

The term on-page search engine optimization, or on-page SEO refers to a set of SEO techniques that involve only encoding of HTML, CSS or PHP or whatever technology you use as well as techniques in writing content, title tags, alt attributes and naming files. In short, on-page SEO is all about controlling the website you're optimizing for search engines.

On-page SEO is sometimes referred to as making the website search engine friendly. It is based on the assumption that a number of not-so-good practices in web design and development make it difficult for search engines to determine what the website is all about (such as creating a pure flash website). On-page SEO is basically developing a website in a way that avoids these practices, or replacing them where they were already implemented.

However, on-page SEO is more than making a website search engine friendly. There are a number of things that you can do to your website to make it to the top of search results, depending on how many websites are competing with you for a certain string being searched. Writing your content with some strings in mind a.k.a. targetting keywords is also part of on-page SEO effort.
